Biography

Dr.ir.ing. Sander Mertens holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, specializing in “Wind Energy in the Built Environment.” He earned a Master’s degree in Applied Physics from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Inholland University of Applied Sciences. During his PhD, he led the Wind Energy/Building Physics department at the engineering firm DHV. He later co-founded Ingreenious, an international consultancy firm, and also co-founded Windchallenge, where he spent nine years working on wind energy projects.

In 2018, he was appointed Professor of “Energy in Transition” at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. He is an expert in the integrated approach of the energy transition, with a focus on system integration of hydrogen, direct current, and low-temperature heat. In June 2020, he became the Director of the Centre of Expertise “Mission Zero” at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, where he developed a multidisciplinary approach to sustainability transitions and a large partner network.

Sander Mertens serves on the advisory boards of several companies and has contributed to numerous projects focused on the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
