As a joint programme between the North Sea Foundation and Natuur & Milieu, The Rich North Sea seizes the unique opportunity offered by offshore wind farms to enhance nature in the North Sea. As such, we are helping our earth in two ways; renewable energy to counter climate change, and nature development to enhance biodiversity in the North Sea. 5 years after the start of the program, we now look back together with one of our partners, Ørsted.

The North Sea gives us all kinds of riches in the form of ecosystem services. However, nature is under pressure of all human activities. Research shows that nature on the North Sea is in decline. If we do not act the riches of the North Sea might run dry. In order to turn the tide Natuur & Milieu has written a vision for 2040 together with the North Sea Foundation, WWF and Birdlife the Netherlands. In this vision they outline how nature can be restored. Rob van Tilburg from Natuur & Milieu shall in this session answer questions about the North Sea vision.

Bluestream main focus in the R&D is: diverless execution of repeating scopes. By way of automatisation and robotisation Bluestream has successfully implemented various specialised ROV tooling in her IRM projects. The mature assets in the non-renewable markets are subject to more complex inspection and various life-time extension projects have created a wealth of experience and track record in complex inspections, such as weld inspections. This year Bluestream has successfully used this technology developed for the non-renewable market in the renewable market for the same client, who has sponsored the development of this technology.

To protect our undersea infrastructure, the knowledge and equipment of the offshore energy supply chain is much needed. Following the successful session at HNLMS Snellius during the ONS in Stavanger, IRO is organizing a panel discussion ‘seabed security, during which the Ryal Navy and the SeaSEC Center will compare notes with the industry and see what they would need from each other. The Seabed Security Experimentation Centre’s mission is “Accelerating the adoption of capabilities to secure undersea infrastructure in shallow waters”
With this focus, SeaSEC is one of a kind. It’s key ingredients are collaboration across the board (international, civilian and military) and a very practical approach. By experimenting with existing technologies, we address emerging security concerns of asset owners, law enforcement, government agencies and navies. SeaSEC is an initiative of the six nation Northern Naval Capability Cooperation, seeking to support naval industries in NO, SE, FI, DK, GE and NL. It is supported by TNO, a leading Research & Technology Organization.

The offshore supply chain must innovate and scale up to meet the ambitious Dutch offshore wind goals. The Netherlands aims to achieve 21GW of offshore wind energy by 2032 and plans to more than double this capacity in the subsequent years, significantly aiding the energy transition. However, the unique characteristics of offshore wind and the challenges the sector faces, complicate efforts to innovate and scale projects. A supportive financing landscape is crucial to avoid bottlenecks that could impede the rollout of offshore wind energy in the Netherlands.
Invest-NL and TKI Offshore Energy, in collaboration with JBR, are conducting a study to enhance the financeability of innovative- and scaling projects within the Dutch offshore wind energy supply chain. Preliminary findings on the financing demand and supply, and related challenges within the Dutch offshore wind energy sector will be shared.

Panel discussion on onshore & offshore wind energy opportunities in Ukraine.
As Ukraine enters the third year of large-scale war, it remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing wind energy development. Private Ukrainian wind energy companies recognise that their contributions to building a decentralised, renewable energy system are essential for achieving true energy independence and sustainability. Currently, Ukraine is developing approximately 4 GW of new onshore wind projects, set to be operational by 2030. Additionally, the country possesses significant technical potential for offshore wind energy development in the Azov and Black Seas, estimated at 50 GW. The Netherlands, as a global leader in wind energy, is already supporting Ukraine in reaching its wind energy goals, particularly in establishing a robust legal framework. This session will explore the critical role of wind energy in Ukraine’s current energy balance and the progress made toward offshore wind development. Available investment opportunities in the Ukrainian wind energy market during wartime and what the market can offer to Dutch partners. Moreover, we will examine the outcomes of the UA-NL project “Legislation Fostering Wind Energy Development in Ukraine” and future prospects of the bilateral cooperation.
